The Bechdel Test:

  1. It has to have at least two women in it
  2. Who talk to each other
  3. About something besides a man

Most movies surprisingly do not pass this test. Here is a list of some recent ones that actually do:

The King's Speech (2010)

The story of King George VI of Britain, his impromptu ascension to the throne and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch become worthy of it.

Where it passes: Queen Elizabeth tells her two young daughters a story and talks to them about moving to their new home (Buckingham Palace). She also politely introduces herself to Mrs. Logue, who is flabbergasted to meet the Queen.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

Scott Pilgrim must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes in order to win her heart.

Where it passes: Knives asks Julie to show her where to find Clash at Demonhead albums. Roxy and Ramona talk a little bit about their past that isn't really about Scott.

Zombieland (2009)

A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, and a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the Last Twinkie and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America.

Where it passes:Two of the film's four leads are young women. The sisters talk to each other about guys, but also zombie killing and visiting the "Pacific Playland" amusement park in LA.

Black Swan (2010)

A ballet dancer wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan.

Where it passes: The lead character regularly talks to her mother about ballet and both of their careers. There's also a lot of discussion among the ballet dancers about the politics and challenges of the profession.

The Runaways (2010)

A coming-of-age biopic about '70s teenage band The Runaways.

Where it passes: The whole film is about how they wanted to be the first female rock group ever. I don't think there are any conversations about guys. Actually 99% is about the music, just as it should be!

Julie & Julia (2009)

Julia Child's story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with blogger Julie Powell's 2002 challenge to cook all the recipes in Child's first book.

Where it passes: Although both title characters never talk to each other, they both talk about food, their careers or other topics with women.

Star Trek (2009)

A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members.

Where it passes: Uhura and her roommate Gaila briefly discuss Uhura's lab time, and her interception of a Klingon transmission. The interaction is brief, but necessary to the plot.

Sucker Punch (2011)

A young girl is institutionalized by her abusive stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the mental facility.

Where it passes: The characters argue, scheme, fight, and bond together about many things other than men.
